Alphabet Soup Part Two: Group Crit

At the end of our first week on the second part to the Alphabet Soup project we had to carry out self led group crits. In our group there were six of us and this is what was said.

How are the four words selected to represent the typeface being explored?
Due to the fact that I knew exactly what I wanted to do with this project I could only come up with two words, and those were: Traditional Tattoo. These were explored by looking at traditional tattoo designs, eg. roses, anchors, ships etc. and pre existing tattoo fonts. I then combined the two to come up with the final result.

Why is the existing typeface that has been selected to manipulate an inappropriate/appropriate choice?
Arial narrow is a good choice as it appears light and doesnt pack too much of a punch. Therefore this makes it easy to draw over the top of and edit it to appear the way I want it to look. Adding colour also improves its impact.

What are the reasons behind the design decisions you have made for the typeface so far?
The direction I decided to go with this project was incredibly clear from the very first moment I saw the person I would interview. I felt as though I couldn't go wrong as Aaron loves tattoos, and anyone who is prepared to display their interests by inking them into their skin obviously feels passionately about them. Therefore I explored the traditional path and created a design I think he would be pleased with.

Action to be taken?
1. Decide whether the rose will feature on every letter or not. Maybe just on the vowels, less common letters etc.
2. Look at the incisions made in the letters and decide on the final design.
3. Explore capitals and glyphs further. Maybe even design capital 'A' for name badge.
4. Look into colour in more detail. Is black and red the right combination or are other shades more appropriate.
5. Settle on rose theme, and dismiss other ideas that do not seem as successful.
