Referring to the typeface you have designed answer the following:
Which personality traits did you choose to respond top and apply to the typeface?
I chose to explore a keen interest of my partner and therefore researched traditional tattoo designs. 'Sailor Jerry' was a person Aaron mentioned he admired so I decided to look into his work and style, and see if I could blend it with my own.
What are the reasons behind the design decisions you have made for the typeface?
I wanted to take a very direct approach and visually communicate my partner as well as I could, therefore I used traditional methods to create a font that was as simple as possible but was still recognisable as tattoo inspired. I decided to use the lower case alphabet because all the pre-existing examples I could find where upper case, and I wanted to try something different. I used the rose illustration because it is probably the most recognisable traditional design, but still quite simple.
In what ways are the results effective?
I think I have conveyed my message very well and it is clearly evident that the typeface is in the style of 'sailor' tattoo fonts. However I do think there is still quite abit more work I could do to perfect the font, for example; correcting the serifs on each letter and adding roses to the glyphs.
Referring to the typeface that has been designed for you answer the following:
What personality traits do you interpret from the typface designed to represent you?
I can instantly recognise the blend between intricate Mexicana designs and Brandon Boyd illustrations. Whereas the colours also visually represent traditional Mexican designs, they are also reminiscent of the sixties and the vibrant, up-lifting colour schemes of the decade.
Describe what you think of the typeface:
The intricate detail on each letter is amazing. From afar each letter is easily recognisable, even without an outline surrounding each letter form, whereas up close the detail is incredible, and you can tell alot of effort went into each letter. I also like the subtle use of colour, and how red, blue and purple blend seemlessly with the black.
In what ways is it effective, and in what ways is it ineffective of representing you?
Its incredible effective in communicating three of my favourite things: traditional mexican designs, Brandon Boyd illustrations and the decade of free love.
